Two teenagers have been handed lengthy custodial sentences after carrying out a machete attack that left three people injured at a supermarket in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
The violence unfolded inside the entrance foyer of Asda, in Priestsic Road, at 11.51pm on 13 March 2026.
CCTV footage captured two groups talking near the self-service checkouts before moving towards the store's entrance. Moments later, two teenagers from one of the groups produced machetes and launched an unprovoked attack on three males from the other group.
All three victims suffered injuries to their arms and required treatment at King's Mill Hospital.
Detectives launched an immediate investigation, reviewing CCTV footage, speaking to witnesses and carrying out extensive enquiries to identify those responsible.
Their work led to the arrest and prosecution of two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
On 18 September, at Nottingham Crown Court, both defendants were sentenced after admitting three counts of Section 18 wounding with intent and possession of a knife blade in a public place.
Each was given an extended sentence of detention totalling 10 years.
Detective Constable Chloe Baugh, who led the investigation, said:
"This was a shocking and completely unjustified attack carried out in a public place where innocent members of the public could easily have been caught up in the violence.
"The victims were left with significant injuries and it is only through sheer good fortune that nobody suffered even more serious or life-changing harm.
"Weapons such as machetes have absolutely no place in our communities, and we remain relentless in our efforts to tackle knife crime and bring those responsible before the courts.
"I hope these sentences serve as a stark warning to anyone who chooses to carry or use a knife that they can expect to face severe consequences."
Nottinghamshire Police continues to urge anyone with information about people carrying weapons to report it.
Information can be passed to police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
