Newark Castle project set for extra funding

Newark and Sherwood District Council says additional funding from the UK Government’s Local Regeneration Fund has been allocated to the Newark Castle Gatehouse Project, subject to Cabinet approval.

The money has become available following revised proposals for the Newark Market Place scheme.

The Gatehouse project aims to restore the nationally important landmark, improve accessibility and create new exhibition spaces.

The council says archaeological investigations have uncovered significant discoveries, including walls and foundations dating back to the original 12th-century castle, a medieval cesspit and a well.

Further conservation work has also been identified as previously inaccessible areas of the Gatehouse were opened up.

The funding will be considered by the council’s Cabinet on Tuesday 15 September.
